DREAMWORKS DIGITAL A&R: WEASEL.COM WAS ALREADY TAKEN

MP3 Intranet Set-Up Gives Unsigned Acts New Avenue For Rejection
DreamWorks Records is set to launch a digital A&R site that will accept MP3 submissions from unsigned acts and evaluate them on the company Intranet.

The venture, dubbed DreamWorks Digital, allows staff to review submissions separated by category (such as genre and region) and can acquire more information on the ones they like from a central database.

Other than Farmclub, no other Net venture with major-label affiliation takes unsolicited MP3 material. Unlike Farmclub, the material is for internal review only. A&R dude Luke Wood and New Media swami Jed Simon will oversee the project.

The label is currently in talks with potential marketing partners for the venture.

Though artists who upload MP3s are not guaranteed a reply, they will no doubt welcome this step, which represents a democratization of the submission process. It also represents a flood of tracks recorded in bathrooms by stoned teenagers.

In a related story, DreamWorks is planning to outfit its radio promotion department with a high-tech "answering machine."
