Grammy has added more performers to Music’s Biggest Night. Will the added star power be enough to overcome the aftermath of the nominating process, which was marred by glaring snubs of stars such as Justin Timberlake, who was inexcusably excluded from the Album of the Year category, and Jay Z, who was inexplicably denied nods in any of the major categories?
It was announced today that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Taylor Swift, John Legend, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban and Lifetime Achievement honorees Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have been added to the schedule for this month’s Grammy telecast, while Sara Bareilles will perform with MusiCares Person of the Year (and Pop icon) Carole King.
The show, hosted by LL Cool J, will unfold at L.A.’s Staples Center on1/26; the broadcast kicks off at 8pm EST on CBS.
The latest additions join nominees Katy Perry, P!nk with Nate Ruess, Daft Punk with Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder, Kendrick Lamar with Imagine Dragons (nominated but somehow not for Best New Artist), Lorde (also nominated, but also bizarrely passed over for Best New Artist), Robin Thicke with Grammy winners/Hall of Famers Chicago, eight-time Grammy winners Metallica (with Chinese pianist Lang Lang) and a salute to Country legend Merle Haggard featuring Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Blake Shelton.
Along with JT and Jay Z, another glaring absence from the lineup is Beyoncé, whose blockbuster new album has dominated the music narrative since the holidays. Can Team Grammy lure Mr. Carter back for a performance with Mrs. Carter?
2013’s Grammy telecast was down in the ratings over the prior year, which was sparked by mega-selling Adele and a tribute to the late Whitney Houston. Can Academy chief Neil Portnow, producer Ken Ehrlich and CBS’ Jack Sussman inject enough sparkle, after "nom-gate," to compensate for the prior missteps? We shall see.
