THE BALLSTREET JOURNAL

When I think back to recent years, it feels like the amount of new releases has grown exponentially in 2017. I haven’t seen any updated data, but with all the independent labels and regional artists that popped up, we've just had an influx of new music. The charts have jammed, and there are weeks where it takes over 650 spins to debut. This is typically the time of year where a label might drop one newer artist in hopes of securing some traction and start off the new year with a story. But with only about four weeks left in the year, many labels still have multiple releases and no end in sight! It’ll be interesting to see how this model works this holiday season, and what records get lost in the down time.

Gary Spangler and Davey Dee at Republic continue to grow Post Malone f/21 Savage’s “rockstar.” It’s #1, up 215 spins, this week. And it’s about 1,800 spins in front of the next competitor. Expect this song to enjoy another week or two at the top. J Balvin & Willy Williams f/Beyoncé’s “Mi Gente” (PW/UMLE) is at #4, up 320 spins. It should get to #3 this coming week. The Weeknd’s “Die for You” (XO) has a huge jump on the chart, moving to #15, up 160 spins. Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” (Safehouse/Hollywood/Island) lands at #17, and Post Malone’s “I Fall Apart” moves inside the Top 25 to #23. It gains 290 additional spins. Taylor Swift’s “…Ready for It?” just misses debuting at #41. They’re impacting Big Sean & Metro Boomin f/21 Savage’s “Pull Up N Wreck” this week. It was up 175 spins, and the goal is to compete with Eminem & Beyoncé’s “Walk on Water” (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) for Most Added this week.

RCA’s Inca and Lori G move G-Eazy f/A$AP Rocky & Cardi B’s “No Limit” to #3 this week. It was up 635 spins, and the plan is to take this #1. GoldLink’s “Crew” (Squaaash Club) is at #8, up triple-digits, while Chris Brown’s “Questions” slides into the Top 10. He was up 180 spins this week. SZA’s “The Weekend” (TDE) jumps #33-26, gaining 215 spins, and Marshmello X Khalid’s “Silence” (Joytime Collective) is at #34, after gaining 110 spins. They have a double debut this week as well, with A$APFerg’s “Plain Jane” (Polo Grounds) landing at #39 and Chris Brown’s “Pills & Automobiles” coming in at #40.

Columbia’s Ayelet Schiffman and James White heat things up with the release of N.E.R.D. & Rihanna’s “Lemon,” which debuts in just one week, coming in at #36 and gaining 585 spins. Calvin Harris f/Kehlani & Lil Yachty’s “Faking It” jumps to #21, gaining 250 spins. Russ’ “Wife You Up” also has an amazing jump on the chart, going #37-28 this week. He was up nearly 300 spins. They’re impacting a new Lecrae this week, entitled “Broke” (Reach), coming off the heels of his last Top 10 record. They also just dropped Remy Ma f/Lil Kim’s new one, “Wake Me Up.” Make sure you check it out.

Def Jam’s Rick Sackheim and Noah Sheer welcome Jay-Z f/Damian Marley’s Bam” (Roc Nation) into the Top 25, after gaining 115 spins. They also have 2 Chainz f/21 Savage’s “4AM” (G.O.O.D.) at #33.

Epic’s Sujit Kundu has Travis Scott’s “Butterfly Effect” (Grand Hustle) at #11, gaining 75 spins, with sights set on the Top 10. Camila Cabello f/Young Thug’s “Havana” (SYCO) is on auto pilot. It moves #18-13, adding over 620 spins to her total. Yo Gotti’s “Juice” (CMG) is up triple digits, and a week away from debuting. Sujit still has three releases this year, as Zoey Dollaz f/Chris Brown’s “Post & Delete” (Freebandz), French Montana’s “Famous” (BadBoy) and Future & Young Thug f/Offset’s “Patek Water” are coming in the next three weeks.

Capitol’s Greg Marella and Dixie Tipton are sitting pretty with Migos f/Nicki Minaj & Cardi B’s “MotorSport” (QC/Motown). It races #35-22, up 680 spins. They also debut Sam Smith’s “To Good at Goodbyes” this week at #38. Halsey’s “Bad at Love” (Astralwerks) is at #42 and should debut this coming week. Also, they’re impacting Stefflon Don & French Montana’s “Hurtin’ Me” (QC/Motown) this week.

THE BALLSTREET JOURNAL

I want to start this week by congratulating the entire Def Jam promotion squad for the job they did with Logic f/Alessia Cara & Khalid’s “1-800-273-8255,” which went #1 this week at Top 40. Rick Sackheim, Noah Sheer, Keith Rothschild, Nicki Farag and everyone involved. This is a special record, from the message to the passion of his fans. Rhythm had a phenomenal run with the record as well. There were definitely some skeptics out there, but the Def Jam crew put their blinders on, and the rest is history. They also continue to build Jay-Z f/Damian Marley’s “Bam” (Roc Nation). It was up triple-digits again this week. 2 Chainz f/Travis Scott’s “4AM” comes in at #38, up 85 spins.

Columbia’s Ayelet Schiffman and James White take it back old-school style with a track from NERD entitled “Lemon,” featuring Rihanna. They dropped it on 11/1 and it’s really creating a buzz. The range of stations who are already supporting span from KPWR Los Angeles to WJMN Boston to KKFR Phoenix and many stations in between. It will debut this coming week. They also have Calvin Harris f/Kehlani & Lil Yachty’s “Faking It” already inside the Top 25, thanks to a 450-spin increase. They debut Russ’ “Wife You Up” this week. He comes in at #37, up an impressive 475 spins.

Republic’s Gary Spangler and Davey Dee continue to hold down the #1 spot with Post Malone’s “rockstar.” It was up over 500 spins, which is quite impressive. It looks like it'll hold for at least another week. J Balvin & Willy Williams f/Beyoncé’s “Mi Gente” (PW/UMLE) is still growing as well. It’s at #4 this week, after adding 400 spins to the total. Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” (Hollywood/Safehouse/Island) is connecting at the format, as she moves to #19, gaining 240 spins. The Weeknd’s “Die For You” (XO) is up 225 spins, and is picking up steam. Post Malone’s other track, “I Fall Apart,” leaps #35-27, after an increase of over 400 spins. Taylor Swift’s “...Ready For It” (Big Machine) closes in on a debut, as she’s up over 100 spins and is now at #46. Trinidad Cardona’s “Jennifer” (Run-It-Up/Island) is still developing. They're impacting Big Sean & Metro Boomin f/21 Savage’s “Pull Up N Wreck” (BPG/RVG) 11/14.

RCA’s Inca and Lori G see G-Eazy f/A$AP Rocky & Cardi B’s “No Limit” climb to #6, gaining an amazing 870 spins. This is looking more and more like the next #1 record. They also have Goldlink’s “Crew” (Squaaash Club) at #9, up 240 spins, as well as Chris Brown’s “Questions” at #11, up 125 spins. Miguel f/Travis Scott’s “Sky Walker” (Bystorm Ent.) lands at #21, adding 260 more spins, and SZA’s “The Weekend” is up 250 spins, good enough for #33 this week. They debut Marshmello X Khalid’s “Silence” (Joytime Collective) at #40 this week, and will debut A$AP Ferg’s “Plain Jane” (Polo Grounds) next week. That was up 170 spins at #43 this week.

The debut of the week comes compliments of Capitol’s Greg Marella and Dixie Tipton. Migos f/Nicki Minaj & Cardi B’s “Motorsport” (Quality Control/Motown) was up 740 spins, and comes in at #35. As for Sam Smith's "Too Good at Goodbyes," they just miss debuting as it falls one spot short at #41.

Epic’s Sujit Kundu sees Travis Scott’s “Butterfly Effect” (Grand Hustle) move #14-12, up 145 spins. 21 Savage’s “Bank Account” (Slaughter Gang) is at #16, with a 95-spin increase. Camila Cabello f/Young Thug’s “Havana” (SYCO) is red-hot, as it shoots #25-18, gaining 615 spins.
