RHINO'S VU FLEXI: LET A THOUSAND BANDS BLOOM
11/27/15

The Velvet Underground, “Rock and Roll” (demo version) (Rhino): Readers over a certain age will especially grok the excitement of a flexi-disc—a one-off, one-sided single pressed on floppy vinyl and usually shipped inside a magazine—and will see the particular aptness of this one. After all, VU’s cult-like fan base developed in large part among zine readers and writers, and this cool rendering of the Loaded classic is as badass as anything ever pressed into the medium. It’s all part of the massive forthcoming 45th Anniversary Loaded box; kudos to Jason Reynolds and team Rhino for this early gift and the accompanying “newspaper.” They’re keeping the puckish promotional vision of Stan Cornyn alive.
