RECORD STORE DAY: LEGACY VINYL GOODIES
4/16/15

The jewel of the most recent batch of Sony Legacy Records Store Day vinyl reissues we sampled is Johnny Cash Live in Prague. Pressed on 180g red vinyl, this stirring artifact captures Cash and his Tennessee Three (really five players, but no matter) in top form. His chiseled-in-granite voice seems to gather even more authority behind the Iron Curtain.

Of course there are classics like "Ring of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down," all of which are delivered with ample soul and grit. But some of the set's most affecting moments come from much older material, such as "Big River," "Streets of Laredo" and a medley of locomotive songs that's stunning in its broad-strokes depiction of an America that was already gone three decades ago.

The audience, having witnessed all manner of horror and repression, responds to these tales of freedom won and lost with palpable emotion. This set's a real treasure.

Also issued for RSD by Legacy are a fleet of very cool 7" singles, including "Touch Me I'm Dick" by the Citizen Dick band assembled for Cameron Crowe's movie "Singles" (with a "flyer" inside touting an evening of Seattle in-jokes); a live Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" b/w "Freedom" from 1970; and the pop versions of "Homeward Bound"/"Leaves That Are Green" by Simon & Garfunkel.

We'll have more RSD news for you shortly.
