WHAT IT IS: L.A.-based JPEGMAFIA has generated significant buzz with his unmatched, boundary pushing sound. Born in N.Y. to Jamaican parents, he spent his childhood in East Flatbush, Brooklyn—deeply rooted in West Indian culture and black pride—and his mid-teens in rural Alabama before joining the military after high school. His music was heavily influenced by his deployment to different parts of the world; his experiences helped him add new elements to his producing and rapping repertoire. Despite the often heavy subject matter, JPEGMAFIA infuses his work with humor and satire, evident in his collaborative full-length album, SCARING THE HOES, with Danny Brown. Produced entirely by JPEGMAFIA, the 14-track set—which yielded his latest single, “Lean Beef Patty”—is the first of three albums set to drop this year.
