WHAT IT IS: One of the most exciting bands to emerge in the Latin-music space, Cimafunk is the brainchild of Cuban medical student turned Latin-funk-star Erik Iglesias Rodríguez, aka Cima. Fronting this nine-piece band, Cima broke on to the scene in 2017 with music that transcends language and features powerful grooves complemented by James Brown-inspired vocals to create an infectious sound. The 2018 hit “Me Voy” became a household favorite in Cuba, while 2021 saw the arrival of Cimafunk’s sophomore album, El Alimento. The 13-track set features “Funk Aspirin” with George Clinton and blends Afro-Cuban elements with classic American funk, resulting in a global funk, soul and hip-hop amalgam.
