WHAT IT IS: Born in Dubai to a family of Mexican expats, Julian Lamadrid grew up on a steady diet of literature, film and music, naming Elvis, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Suicide and Joy Division as his “kings.” Lamadrid’s vocals swim in lush synth pads, big melodies and major chords through the dips and turns of his new self-produced album, Mala Noche. The 21-year-old writer/artist, now based in NYC, blends an array of genres to sonically create a unique and invigorating style of pop.
