Sam Fischer (Sony U.K./RCA)
2/4/20

WHAT IT IS: Chances are you’ve stumbled across TikTok videos with the sound of Sam Fischer’s “This City,” but that’s far from what the Australian singer/songwriter expected. As Fischer was losing faith that his single would gain traction, the platform catapulted the track, which now has over 40m streams at Spotify and 20m on Apple. With its delicate plucked-guitar melody and Fischer’s intoxicatingly raw vocals—which bear an uncanny resemblance to Sam Smith’s—it’s no surprise “This City” has become a viral sensation. The now-L.A.-based artist’s self-released debut EP, Not a Hobby, produced by Morgan Taylor Reid, was re-released via Sony U.K. late last year. He’s also written for such artists as Ciara, Clean Bandit, and Jennifer Hudson.
