WHAT IT IS: Daniel Shultz and his bandmates— Dylan T. Graves, J. Anthony Joiner and Kendrick Don-Reid Brent— know a thing or two about partying, evident in their album, Out of the Blue. Throughout its 10 tracks, from the slashing riffs and metronomic rhythms of opener “Fool” to the crooned vocals and dew-drop guitars of “Rita Repulsa,” people are passed out on curbs under neon signs, breaking hearts over rolled-up dollar bills and more. Shultz, who began writing songs at 12, grew up in a household of musicians, including his two older brothers, Matt and Brad—co-founders of Cage the Elephant.
