ICYMI: GETTING CONFIDENTLY LOST IN SABRINA CLAUDIO
6/29/17

BY KENZ MEADOWS

If you missed Tuesday night's performance at The Echo from Sabrina Claudio, it's likely because tickets sold out long before you expected. With a combined 8m streams of her songs on Spotify, and over 3m plays of her debut single, "Confidently Lost" on Soundcloud, Claudio isn't hurting for a fanbase. The line to get in started forming two and half hours before doors opened, something I’ve rarely seen during my time living in Echo Park. By 9:30, The Echo was at capacity and absolutely electric lying in wait for Claudio to come out and seduce attendees with her nine-song set.

She and a four-piece band played every song off her EP—an anthology of longing, entitled Confidently Lost and released via SC Entertainment. Her latest single, "Unravel Me," was met with word-for-word audience participation. She also provided tastes of new music with the tender and sexy "Frozen" and powerful ballad "Everlasting Love"; both were warmly received and delicious. She closed the evening with an encore, singing a much-requested iteration of "Tell Me." The whole evening—hot and crowded though it was—she mesmerized, driven by the cool intimacy reminiscent of a speakeasy. And although a 2017 album release was hinted at, Claudio refused to make any promises.

A Miami-native, Claudio is doing her part to usher in R&B's new era, with Bossa Nova influences and contemporary jazz rhythms. She indulges comparisons to Sade and Aaliyah and is somehow reminiscent of Selena, while wholly her own. Her voice has both range and diversity and is made twice as charismatic by her capacity to tap into the emotion her songs evoke.

The buzzing starlet doesn't have any upcoming shows scheduled yet, but you can listen to her EP and single on Spotify or buy it on iTunes. In the meantime, indulge in the ultra-sensual music video for "Unravel Me" below.
