WHAT IT IS: “I prefer to create friction,” the post-country chanteuse offers. “Because if you’re not pushing buttons, you’re just making something pleasant; it’s probably been done before—and it’s not making anyone feel anything.” New City Blues is a high-energy box-cutter of emotion, marked by the bite and punch of a smart girl who knows there’s more to life than a cold beer and cut-offs. Trying to put a label on her sound is tricky. Sellers’ sound has an immediacy and an urgency, as well as a jagged edge best described as garage country.
