WHAT IT IS: The L.A.-based four-piece—lead singer Joe Jonas, keyboardist Cole Whittle, guitarist JinJoo Lee and drummer Jack Lawless—was born from Jonas’ long-brewing plan to launch an offbeat pop project inspired by the melodic R&B of Earth, Wind & Fire and Hall & Oates. Inspiration for the single came out of a misunderstanding from a conversation between Swedish producers Mattman & Robin; the hitmakers were talking about getting cake by the ocean, when, in actuality, they wanted a “sex on the beach” cocktail. “The song was a total breakthrough,” says Jonas.
