WHAT IT IS: Janelle Monae’s new venture with Epic, Wondaland Records, is a vessel for Janelle’s powers as a curator and tastemaker to fully take form. A name given at birth, Jidenna means “embracing the father,” in the Igbo language. His music is a testimony to the contrasting experiences that have shaped, complicated and ultimately defined his life. Described as a millennial version of Andre 3000, with the lyrical acumen of Kendrick Lamar and worldliness of Stromae, Jidenna continues to refine his elegant, funky take on hip-hop. With a genre he defines as Swank, he brings together sociopolitical content and personal narratives wrapped in sounds that get his legendary soirees turned up.
