Charles Perry (Verve/Interscope)

WHAT IT IS: As a preteen in Brooklyn in the mid-’80s, the nascent singer/songwriter split his time between singing in six church choirs and swiping CDs from local chain stores to feed his fascination with soul legends like Sam Cooke and Nina Simone. On his upcoming debut album, Perry uses those musical roots as the foundation for a brash and dazzling soul/pop/R&B hybrid he’s conceptualized as “the love child of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Rick James, Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye and Randy Newman.” Featuring powerful vocals honed in part by singing backup for the likes of Michael Jackson, tracks such as the beat-driven and sweetly heartfelt debut single exhibit his outsized passion for throwback soul and deliver what he calls “old-school wisdom for a new-school truth.” Expect remixes from Tiesto and RAC later this month.
