SMP UPS MICHAEL ABITBOL
10/6/21

Sony Music Publishing has upped Michael Abitbol to SVP, Head of U.S. Digital.

In his new role, Abitbol will manage and oversee SMP’s U.S. digital business, including the expanded U.S. digital team.

His will also engage with digital services, negotiate and draft digital agreements, implement digital strategy and liaise with SMP’s digital teams globally. Based in the N.Y. office, he reports to SMP President, Global Digital, Antony Bebawi.

“I am confident that our revamped U.S. Digital team, together with our incredible leadership, can create exciting new opportunities for Sony Music Publishing’s songwriters in the digital space,” said Abitbol.

Speaking on Abitbol, Bebawi said, “He has a deep understanding of the U.S digital licensing landscape, and he has built a great team that shares the same unwavering commitment to SMP’s songwriters. I am excited about the contributions that Michael and his team will make to the continued growth of our U.S. digital business.”

Previously, Abitbol negotiated deals on behalf of SMP’s songwriters and catalogs for higher rates and better long-term financial stability, including recent deals with Peloton, Soul Cycle and other fitness-related apps, as well as renewing deals with Facebook, TikTok and YouTube.

Abitbol first launched his career at the company in 2007, specializing in digital deals at EMI Music Publishing, and moved to SMP in 2012 when it took over administration of the EMI catalog. Before joining EMI, he worked as a lawyer at Davis & Gilbert and previously held roles in artist management.
