John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane’s Jowcol Music has expanded its deal in the United States with Big Deal Music Group’s Words & Music to include mechanical licensing in addition to a YouTube collection and non-exclusive sync services.
The music of both Coltranes has been enjoying a recent renaissance. In June, Impulse! released an unreleased John Coltrane session from 1963 Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album and on 11/16, Impulse! will release 1963: New Directions featuring material of Coltrane's recordings during that year from the albums Both Directions, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Dear Old Stockholm, Newport '63, and Live at Birdland. A documentary on the saxophonist and his legacy, Chasing Trane, came out in 2016.
In 2017, Luaka Bop released Alice Coltrane's World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. Real Gone Music released the 2-CD box set, Alice Coltrane Spiritual Eternal: The Complete Warner Bros. Studio Recordings in September.
More major releases and other milestones for both artists will come out next year.
While noting the honor of working with their music, Big Deal Music Group VP A&R/Client Services, Damon Booth, said they are “two composers and master musicians who have been among the most influential and inspiring artists in any genre. Their work plugs us in directly to positive forces beyond our limited five-sensory selves."
More power to anyone who can get royalties from a 15-minute sax solo.
