BMI crowned Sony/ATV Music Publishing as Publisher of the Year at its 66th annual Pop Awards Tuesday, marking the fourth time in five years the company has been so honored.
“Winning never goes out of style and we are thrilled to be BMI’s Publisher of the Year after a year in which our songwriters and creative teams were involved in a number of record-breaking successes,” Sony/ATV Chairman and CEO Martin Bandier said between puffs on pre-Castro Cohiba he’s been preserving since the first BMI ceremony.

Sony/ATV songwriters received pop awards for 26 songs during the evening. The company’s winners included Camila Cabello, Alessia Cara, Luis Fonsi, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran who also won Song of the Year for “Shape Of You.”
Besides “Shape Of You,” Sheeran won awards for “Castle on the Hill” and his co-write “Strip That Down,” a hit for Liam Payne. Cara was honored for “1-800-273-8255” (co-written with the pubco’s 6ix, Khalid and Dylan Wiggins), “Scars to Your Beautiful” (written with SATV’s Warren Felder) and “Stay” (a collaboration with the pubbery’s Sarah Aarons, Anders Froen and Noonie Bao); Cabello received awards for her “Havana” and “Bad Things” as well as for the Fifth Harmony song “All in My Head.”
Warner/Chappell hitmaker Justin Tranter was dubbed Songwriter of the Year, for such tunes as "Believer," "Cold," "Heavy" and "Issues." Mark Ronson got the BMI Champion Award.
After the awards, SATV faithful gathered at hipster WeHo spot Katana, where they learned the exciting news that "Despacito" would have its own IPO.
