Upon accepting one of his Golden Globes for Atlanta, UMPG writer and Glassnote artist Childish Gambino thanked show collaborators Migos for making “Bad and Boujee” feat. Lil Uzi Vert, which he called “the best song ever.” The exploding track was co-written by UMPG writer/producer Metro Boomin (pictured at right) and new signing Quavo, as well as Pulse’s G Koop, who also co-produced.
The year’s started off with a bang for SONGS, as The Weeknd rolls on after an explosive 2016. A recent report by our data partner, BuzzAngle, not only called out the remarkable numbers for XO/Republic’s Starboy but noted that “Panda” ( Def Jam) by Desiigner, another SONGS writer, was one of two songs to surpass 700m streams in 2016, a first, and that Major Lazer’s “Cold Water” was the most streamed EDM song. Meanwhile, Noah Cyrus (on RECORDS), seen at left, is Top 10 Most Added at Pop radio and Shazam and a new Lorde set is on the way.
Sony/ATV writer Ed Sheeran has dropped new music, and naturally it’s exploding. The Brit superstar’s two new songs are another reminder of his ridiculous range, as he scores with a club-rocking pop single (“Shape of You”) and a sprawling folk-rock remembrance (“Castle on the Hill”). It’s another coup for the pubco as well as Max Lousada’s WMG U.K., which has nurtured Sheeran since he was a tiny ginger.
We should note, in the wake of the Golden Globes (a key predictor of Oscar wins and a leading exemplar of drunken award-giving), that theatrical songwriters who’ve gone Hollywood are a trending topic, which is particularly pleasing news for Jon Platt (pictured at right). Warner/Chappell composer Justin Hurwitz has leapt into the first rank with the trophy-hogging La La Land, which is selling soundtracks (via Interscope) as well as tickets. W/C also counts Lin-Manuel Miranda among its writers, and his Hamilton is now joined on the charts by the Globe-nominated monster Moana ST from Disney. What other Broadway-bred tunesmiths and performers will break onto the larger media stage? Stay tuned.
