The Radio Music License Committee may no longer have litigation from Irving Azoff’s GMR to worry about, but today BMI stepped up with an action of its own in Federal Rate Court. The PRO, negotiating a new five-year term with the Nashville-based consortium of stations (referred to by Azoff, pre-settlement, as a “cabal”), asked the court to set an interim rate based on the status quo. BMI says the RMLC’s proposed new rate is “based upon incomplete and incorrect information.”
"We attempted to negotiate in good faith with the RMLC for many months, and just before the end of the year, the RMLC presented an interim rate that significantly undervalues the work of BMI’s songwriters,” declared BMI SVP Licensing Mike Steinberg. Given the unmatched caliber of BMI's repertoire, our superior market share on radio, and the ever-increasing value that BMI music brings to the radio industry across all its platforms, we believe the RMLC’s proposal falls well short of what is in the best interests of our affiliates.”
