SONY/ATV INKS GAGA, STING, MORE FOR "NEIGHBOURING RIGHTS"
11/7/16

Sony/ATV has inked Neighbouring Rights deals with Lady Gaga, Sting, legendary drummer Ginger Baker, French Montana and more. Why the British spelling of "Neighbouring Rights"? Because these particular rights, which apply to masters for performance use and thus "neighbour" mechanicals, don't exist for terrestrial radio in the U.S. (though they are available for satellite and online radio). But in various international markets they represent a real revenue opportunity for terrestrial as well, as recordings can be compensated the way compositions are for public performance.

Said Sony/ATV U.K. boss Guy Moot, "Our Neighbouring Rights department has quickly grown into a major player in this sector, reflected by the calibre of artists we are signing. We have set out a clear goal of building up this business in a bespoke manner by signings artists we already have relationships with as well as other hitmakers. With us, it’s not about plugging into a machine, but offering our clients a focused and highly personal service which draws from our creative, business and administrative strengths as the world’s No. 1 music publisher.”

The NR division is led by George Powell, and the pubco's roster of NR acts include Nile Rodgers, Mark Ronson, Slash, Snoop Dogg and the estates of Lou Reed and Amy Winehouse.
