BAD HOMBRES CRASH INTERNET

October 21, 2016

A denial of service (DDoS) attack carried out by persons unknown caused several of the Internet's biggest sites, notably Twitter, Reddit and The New York Times, to crash this morning.

A denial of service (DDoS) attack carried out by persons unknown has caused several of the Internet's biggest sites, notably TwitterReddit, Visa, Netflix, CNN, HBO Now, Yelp, Paypal and The New York Times, to crash.

The attack, which began just after 7am ET, hit DynDNS, one of the largest hubs of the Internet, and among the many sites to go down were several major news outlets. In addition to the NYT, the Boston Globe and other newspaper sites were down. While Dyn engineers got things up and running for a bit, they crashed again, apparently due to another attack.

How do these attacks work? The malicious hombres barrage servers with "junk traffic" until they are beyond capacity.

"Our engineers continue to investigate and mitigate several attacks aimed against the Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure," reads a recent update from the Dynstatus site.

Unable to access Twitter for nearly half a day, @RealDonald Trump completely lost his shit. Sad. #CountingTheDays
