THE COACHELLA Q&A: MUSTARD

April 8, 2025
MUSTAAAAAARD!

(Kanya Iwana)

Fresh off a pair of career-defining moments in February—winning the Grammy Record of the Year award as co-producer of Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us," and a subsequent record-breaking Super Bowl halftime show performance with Lamar—West Coast hip-hop stalwart Mustard (repped by WME's Caroline Yim and Mary Hannon) will perform at Coachella on 4/11 & 18.

We're betting that some of his famous friends and collaborators (Kendrick? Ty Dolla $ign? YG?) join him onstage. We're also betting he regrets ever opening an email from HITS.

What’s the first concert you ever saw?
I was five years old at 92.3 The Beat Summer Jam with Usher and The Alkaholiks performing. I just remember it being crazy that I was able to see Usher at such a young age. I was in shock.

You can go back in time and see any artist perform in concert. Which artist and when?
Tupac is a legend and someone from whom I get a lot of inspiration. It would have been crazy to see him in 1995. That’s when he signed to Death Row, and he was the one.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen while performing?
It started pouring rain when I was on tour with Rihanna, and the whole stadium didn’t move. Some had ponchos on, and some didn’t. It was crazy how dedicated her fans were to just sit there in the pouring rain.

Who’s the artist or celebrity that you’ve most enjoyed meeting backstage at a festival?
It’s always cool seeing my friends and people I know at festivals. I don't necessarily get “excited,” but I do get super-excited when I see my family backstage after I perform.

What was the first Coachella you attended, and who was your favorite act that year?
The year I attended Coachella and when I performed for the first time at Coachella was probably the craziest thing I experienced.

What’s the most rock-star item in your rider?
I’m really simple. I got stuff like candles, fruit and alkaline water.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing perform at this year’s Coachella?
Obviously, myself. I’m looking forward to really showing what I’ve been working on. It’s going to be special. I’m also looking forward to seeing Ty Dolla $ign. I know he is going to kill it.

Do you have a ritual right before going onstage?
My ritual always starts with a prayer. Without God, I’m nothing, and praying definitely calms my nerves. Other than that, I usually just go out and kill it.

What do you plan to do between Coachella weekends, and can we tag along?
Honestly, I just plan on rewatching weekend one. Looking to see how I can improve my set without any drastic changes. Definitely go back to my normal routine: workout, tennis, studio and hanging out with my kids.
