THE COACHELLA Q&A: THE MARÍAS' MARÍA ZARDOYA
Led by frontwoman and namesake María Zardoya, L.A. indie-pop quartet The Marías (Nice Life/Atlantic) have become unexpected chart fixtures with the streaming success of "No One Noticed," off their second LP, Submarine.
As "No One Noticed" racked up nearly 350m Spotify spins, opportunities for the band followed, including Zardoya's recent star turn on Selena Gomez and benny blanco's "Ojos Tristes" and a prime spot at this year's Coachella, 4/11 & 18 (The Marías are booked by UTA's Samantha Kirby Yoh and Parker Glenn). A brand new single, "Back to Me," crashed the Spotify charts over the weekend.
All winning streaks have to come to an end, though, and for Zardoya, that meant suffering through this HITS questionnaire.
What’s the first concert you ever saw?
Does church count? Every Sunday was a concert at our church. Those were the first memories of watching a band perform and feeling spiritually connected to music. I don’t go to church anymore, but I’m grateful to have experienced live music in that way.
You can go back in time and see any artist perform in concert. Which artist and when?
Hands down Billie Holiday. Her voice cuts like butter. There’s no one else like her.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen while performing?
In our early days we played a festival in Indonesia. We were all pretty surprised that we even had fans that knew our music there. It was one of our biggest streaming markets at the time. When we performed, they not only knew all of our songs in English, but also all of the songs and lyrics in Spanish. I was stunned. In that moment, I knew that music transcends language.
Who’s the artist or celebrity that you’ve most enjoyed meeting backstage at a festival?
It wasn’t at a festival, but I remember meeting Bruno Mars backstage at one of his shows. He’s the absolute sweetest, and he has the softest hands.
What was the first Coachella you attended, and who was your favorite act that year?
My first time attending Coachella, or any festival for that matter, was when we played in 2018. My favorite act was Beyoncé. It felt like a once in a lifetime opportunity seeing her performance at Coachella. It’s a core memory that I’ll never forget. I was in awe at just how powerful and beautiful women are.
What’s the most rock-star item in your rider?
I’m particular about my throat lozenges. I love Grether’s and Fisherman’s Friend.
Who are you most looking forward to seeing perform at this year’s Coachella?
All of our friends who are performing. I’m so proud of everyone. Eyedress, Ivan Cornejo, Clairo, Still Woozy, Shaboozey. So many others. I’m just excited to see everyone shine in the light they all deserve.
Do you have a ritual right before going onstage?
Fist bump everyone in our band and crew with a strict rule for them to make eye contact with me while doing it! I like to feel connected with everyone before we go on, even if for an instant.
What do you plan to do between Coachella weekends, and can we tag along?
Come to my new house for dinner! I’ll make you some Puerto Rican food.
