75 YEARS OF ATLANTIC RECORDS CAPTURES LABEL'S STORIED HISTORY

March 26, 2025

On 3/30 TASCHEN will release 75 Years of Atlantic Records, a definitive photographic history. As Bruno Mars writes in the foreword, “The Atlantic crew changed the way records were made and how people heard then. It was an explosion in sound, and it was pure magic.”

From R&B, soul and jazz to rock, pop and hip-hop, 75 Years of Atlantic Records tells the label’s story through its roster of artists, which includes Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Coltrane and Led Zeppelin. Previously unpublished imagery showcasing pivotal moments in music history and essays by David Ritz, Ben Ratliff and Barney Hoskyns, among others, escort readers through the eras.

"This book is a testament to the artists, visionaries and stories that have defined Atlantic Records over the past 75 years," said TASCHEN founder Benedikt Taschen. ”It’s a celebration of music’s power to transcend boundaries and bring people together."

Founded by Ahmet Ertegun, Herb Abramson and Miriam Abramson, Atlantic was launched with a $10k loan from Ertegun’s dentist. Along with other producer-executives like Jerry Wexler and Ahmet’s brother Nesuhi Ertegun, as well as such towering producers as Tom Dowd, Arif Marden and Joel Dorn, Ertegun went on to create an enduring cultural institution.

The label kicked off its newest chapter last year with the appointment of Elliot Grainge as chairman/CEO of Atlantic Music Group.

75 Years of Atlantic Records comes in a deluxe hardcover edition with a slipcase, available on the TASCHEN website, via specialty retailers and wherever fine books are sold. If we make it to 75 years, nobody will be celebrating.
