It’s Friday morning, and we’re not out of the woods yet. Devastating photos from around SoCal are coming through from Altadena, the Palisades and the PCH-Malibu area, and mandatory evacuations are still in place in critical high-burn areas. Many of our friends spared by the fires thus far remain without power or Internet access.
At least 70,000 people are under evacuation orders, and more than 9,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. Locals are mourning the losses of such institutions as Moonshadows and the Reel Inn in Malibu. The devastating Palisades fire remains uncontrolled, making its way toward the Topanga Canyon and Mandeville areas, according to Watch Duty. At least the Santa Ana winds have temporarily subsided, though there is a possibility they will regain strength over the weekend. Per the Los Angeles Times, this will be "the costliest wildfire disaster in U.S. history."
Many in the music business have lost their homes as this fire becomes a historically devastating event. Road closures of Sunset Boulevard and PCH remain in place, with many residents still unable to confirm for themselves whether their homes have been lost.
The oncoming awards seasons for the film and music industries are being impacted as well: Sunday’s Critics’ Circle Awards, held in Santa Monica, has been rescheduled for 1/26. The deadline for Oscar-nomination voting has been extended two days to 1/14.
iHeartRadio has canceled its ALTer Ego show—which was to feature Cage the Elephant, Incubus, The Lumineers and Glass Animals—at Kia Forum on Saturday (1/11).
Meanwhile, will artists, labels and the business as a whole engage in the usual events that serve as the run-up to the Grammys, scheduled for 2/2? And what about the afterparties?
Thursday's Lakers game against the Charlotte Hornets at Crypto.com Arena in DTLA was postponed. The NFL moved Monday’s playoff game between the Minnesota Vikings and L.A. Rams from Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium to Glendale, Arizona, with air quality a pressing issue.
Although conditions have improved since Thursday morning, red-flag warnings are expected to remain in effect throughout the vicinity and Greater Los Angeles until 6pm today, with high winds anticipated over the weekend.
