Lionsgate’s Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, raked in nearly $100m worldwide in its opening weekend.

The return to the franchise for the first time in nearly a decade made $44m domestically and another $54.5m outside the U.S. and Canada for a $98.5m global tally. The film took the top slot in a packed field of new arrivals.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls Band Together pulled in $30.6m, the third-biggest opening for an animated film this year, Sony’s thriller Thanksgiving carved up $10.2m and the sports comedy Next Goal Wins kicked in $2.7m.
