RODRIGO'S "vampire"
HAS BITE (UPDATE)

UPDATE:
Olivia Rodrigo's "vampire" (Geffen) has scored the biggest debut for a solo song on Spotify so far this year; after all the July 4 fireworks, it continues to hold the #1 slot on the streamery's daily global and U.S. charts.

Geffen's Olivia Rodrigo has returned with the first taste of her highly anticipated sophomore album, GUTS; "vampire," a collaboration with SOUR producer/co-writer Dan Nigro, is out now. Peep the video (helmed by "good 4 u" director Petra Collins) below.

The 20-year-old Grammy magnet's follow-up to SOUR—quadruple platinum, 40b global streams and sales of 17m+ units worldwide—is due 9/8. A suite of physical packages will ship during release week. Ready for more streaming stats? Great! SOUR has joined Spotify's Top 10 most-streamed albums. Every song on that album, by the by, has been certified platinum or multiplatinum by the RIAA.

Addressing the creative process that led to "vampire," Rodrigo recounted: “I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me—almost like an out-of-body experience. It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to.”

Rodrigo begins her sophomore season with three Grammy wins (Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance) under her belt, not to mention having broken multiple streaming records during SOUR's release week. That doesn't suck.
