Wet Leg and Harry Styles lead this year’s BRIT Awards nominations with four apiece. Others up for multiple nods include Aitch and Arctic Monkeys.
Following a breakout year, Wet Leg was nominated for Mastercard Album of the Year for its self-titled debut on Domino as well as Group of the Year, Best New Artist and Best Alternative/Rock Act. Styles will compete for Album of the Year with Harry’s House (Columbia). He’s also in contention for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year for “As It Was” and Best Pop/R&B Act.
Styles will vie with Central Cee, George Ezra, Stormzy and Fred again.. for Artist of the Year and Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, Cat Burns and Sam Smith for Best Pop/R&B Act.
Styles, Burns and Smith are all nominated for Song of the Year, which also sees Aitch, Dave, Ed Sheeran & Elton John, Eliza Rose and Lewis Capaldi in the running.
As pointed out by The Guardian, the list is dominated by male artists, with women-led acts making up just 33% of the nominations. This year’s roster of contenders will be particularly scrutinized for gender balance following the scrapping of the Best British Male and Female categories in 2022 after criticism that Smith, who is non-binary, was not eligible in either category.
The winners will be revealed on 2/11 at a ceremony at London’s O2 Arena. Smith, Kim Petras and Wet Leg will perform.
The winners of the four genre categories—Best Rock/Alternative Act, Best Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act, Best Dance Act and Best Pop/R&B Act—will be determined by a public vote on TikTok starting 1/19.
