Fellow Brooklynites Clive Davis and Dr. Anthony Fauci are among the recipients of the 2022 Portrait of a Nation Awards, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery has announced. Writer/comedian Baratunde Thurston will host the celebratory gala, scheduled for 11/12 in Washington, D.C., and Alicia Keys will present the award to Clive.
The other honorees are filmmaker Ava DuVernay, trailblazing tennis siblings Venus and Serena Williams, chef and World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés and Children’s Defense Fund founder and President Emerita Marian Wright Edelman.
An exhibition featuring portraits of this year’s seven recipients by renowned contemporary artists will open on the museum’s first floor on 11/10 and remain on view through 10/22/23.
Established in 2015, the Portrait of a Nation Awards honor “extraordinary individuals who have made transformative contributions to the United States and its people across all fields of endeavor from the arts and sciences.”
“It is important to honor and celebrate the people who are making a difference and inspiring others,” National Portrait Gallery Director Kim Sajet noted. “The presenters, each of whom have a special relationship with the honorees, help us to offer meaningful thanks to this year’s awardees for their significant contributions to our nation.”
