SOMETHING "FREAKY" IS HAPPENING (UPDATE)

Nicki Minaj's "Super Freaky Girl" (Republic) ended its first week at #1. The hot new single opened with the biggest consumption week for a solo female debut in 2022. It also scored the biggest sales week of any single in 2022—thanks to the fan nation known as the Barbz and multiple versions of the song, including a remix with Madonna.

Expect Minaj to maintain her cultural dominance as "Super Freaky Girl" becomes the #1 track on TikTok U.S.

From 8/19

Republic's Nicki Minaj has a genuine heater with "Super Freaky Girl," which is currently threatening to seize the #1 spot at Spotify U.S., sits in the Top 15 on the Spot's global Top 50, is Top 10 at Apple Music and trending Top 40 at Amazon Music. The track is now underway at both Pop and Rhythm radio.

Sales are also part of the picture, with no fewer than four versions of "Super Freaky Girl" dominating the iTunes Top 10: the explicit (#1) and clean (#3) "Roman Remix" and the explicit (#4) and clean (#8) original versions. The various iterations occupy the #1, 2, 4 and 6 spots at Amazon's download store.

"Super Freaky Girl" was produced by Dr. Luke and Malibu Babie. Most of you will have noticed that it interpolates Rick James' 1981 smash "Super Freak." James' original also provided the propulsive riff behind MC Hammer's 1990 mega-monster, "U Can't Touch This."

The video for Nicki's sizzling track, coming soon, will undoubtedly add nitro to the engine. See below for a preview.
