BOFFO B.O. FOR MJ

MJ may have lost out to A Strange Loop for Best Musical at the Tony Awards on 6/12, but the cast’s performance of “Smooth Criminal” featuring Myles Frost in the title role during the CBS broadcast helped propel the show to the biggest week of its run. The Michael Jackson musical took in $1.66m, giving it the biggest box-office jump on Broadway last week, after Frost took home the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, one of MJ’s four wins.

“That’s one of the benefits of being Tony-nominated—you have the opportunity to perform on the Tonys and put our show in front of so many people who are avid theater lovers,” lead producer Lia Vollack told the AP.

Branca blames it on the boogie.
