Tom Whitlock is flying high after parking his Top Gun songs and other music in Primary Wave Music’s hangar.
The multimillion-dollar deal brings all of Whitlock’s music-publishing interests to Primary Wave, including the Oscar-winning “Take My Breath Away” and “Danger Zone” from 1986’s Top Gun. (“Danger Zone” also appears in the recently released smash Top Gun: Maverick.)
“Tom's classic ‘Danger Zone’ proves that legendary songs will stand the test of time as it has found new audiences upon the release of Top Gun: Maverick. Thirty years later, the song is once again climbing the charts, showing the staying power of a truly iconic piece of music,” said Primary Wave President Justin Shukat.
Initially a drummer, Whitlock forged a relationship with composer Giorgio Moroder in L.A. They co-wrote five songs for Top Gun, including Berlin’s "Take My Breath Away" and the Kenny Loggins hit "Danger Zone."
Whitlock and Moroder later collaborated on songs for the films Over the Top, American Anthem and Rambo III and co-wrote the official theme songs for the 1988 Summer Olympics ("Hand in Hand") and the 1990 FIFA World Cup ("To Be Number One").
