RCA GROWS IN CHINA

Sony Music is inaugurating RCA Records Greater China with the signing of A-Lin and a distribution deal with Jackson Wang, marking pacts with two of the biggest-selling artists in the region.

A member of the K-pop group GOT7, Wang is the first Chinese solo act to debut on the Mediabase U.S. Top 40 Radio Chart. A-Lin is a seven-time KKBOX Music Awards winner.

Kevin Foo (pictured) has been appointed Managing Director of the new label, reporting to CEO of Sony Music Greater China Andrew Chan.

RCA Records Greater China will focus on signing artists in the region, expanding the company’s presence there and investing in artists looking to broaden their opportunities in streaming, gaming, VR, AR, NFTs and the metaverse.

Based in Shanghai, it will develop domestic A&R and local-language artists in the region, amassing its own, dedicated artist roster. The label will be making key hires in A&R, web3, data analytics, digital marketing, digital licensing, gaming and talent development.

Said Chan, “With China achieving more than 30% growth in recorded music revenue in 2021 and leading the Asian market, there is plenty of room for artists and music labels to grow. RCA Records Greater China will improve our ability to create quality, diverse music and products that help artists stand out and compete effectively in the attention economy.”

“We want to give talent the ability to scale, become household brands and fully realize their creative and commercial potential, tapping into opportunities provided by the suite of Sony companies while developing new partnerships with companies in the region working at the cutting edge of the digital revolution,” said Foo, who will retain his role overseeing Sony Music Entertainment Taiwan’s operations, which encompass Shanghai, Taipei and Singapore.
