Rhino Records is joining in the centennial celebration of Charles Mingus’ birth with a panel discussion of the influential bassist/bandleader/composer’s accomplishments and the reissue of his 1957 album Mingus Three.
On Wednesday (5/18) at 4pm ET/1pm PT, Qobuz’ weekly livestream series, Qobuz Live, will present Celebrating Mingus Three, featuring two Mingus collaborators—saxophonist Charles McPherson and pianist Sy Johnson—plus pianist Helen Sung, archival jazz-catalog specialist Florence Halfon and bassist/co-director of The Charles Mingus Institute Zach Kirsimae. NYU jazz-history professor Ashley Kahn will moderate.
Just ahead of Black Music Month, Celebrating Mingus Three will stream across multiple platforms (Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn) and will be available afterward for on-demand viewing.
Qobuz, the hi-res digital music service, emphasizes its "jazz boutique in a superstore world” approach to music streaming. Previous events and partnerships have included livestream panel discussions celebrating Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
