The Weeknd is deepening his ties to Universal Music Group, extending his relationship with Republic Records, starting a new long-term deal with Universal Music Publishing Group and adding future audiovisual projects.
Republic, The Weeknd's label home since 2012, will remain his label partner for future recorded music releases. UMPG will administer all his future works and songwriting catalog upon the expiration of his existing commitment. Merch company Bravado will continue to work closely with The Weeknd and his label, XO, to expand and develop global merchandising, branding, ecommerce and retail licensing opportunities.
“Over the past decade, we have been honored to work so closely with Abel, who has quickly become one of music’s most creative and important artists—a once-in-a-generation talent,” said UMG Chairman & CEO Sir Lucian Grainge. “With [SALXCO/XO Records CEO] Sal Slaiby and the XO team as our incredible partners, we’ve developed a deep trust and respect that has enabled us to successfully execute Abel’s brilliant vision. I am delighted that we are now able to expand this special relationship, welcome this world-class songwriter to UMPG and evolve this creative partnership to new and exciting levels.”
UMPG Chairman & CEO Jody Gerson said, “The Weeknd is a world-class, boundary-breaking artist and I couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him and Sal to UMPG. Through this expanded and multifaceted agreement, the UMPG, Republic and Bravado global teams will be empowered to work closely together under one roof, maximizing opportunities and value for The Weeknd’s artistry in unprecedented ways.”
It’s obvious why anyone would want to be in business with Abel Tesfaye: He has sold more than 75m albums globally; his “Save Your Tears” was the biggest-selling single in the world last year and “Blinding Lights” was 2020’s top seller; and 24 of the songs on his latest release, Dawn FM, made it onto the pop singles chart its first week, a first for any solo artist.
The Weeknd's After Hours Til Dawn Stadium Tour will travel around the globe beginning this summer.
“Abel is the consummate 21st century artist and global superstar, who continues to break down creative barriers with his genre-bending repertoire,” said Republic Chairman & CEO Monte Lipman. “His success and career-defining accomplishments have made a historic impact around the world."
The artist is so popular, spell-check is expected to soon decide that "Weeknd" is a proper spelling in all uses.
