CBS, MESTEL AND THE OPENING OF "THE FLOODGATES"

A newly aired CBS Sunday Morning feature explores the music-catalog wars, with some thoughtful commentary from telegenic Primary Wave boss Larry Mestel.

The deals are getting easier, Mestel explains to correspondent Kelefah Sanneh, "because if a Bruce Springsteen is gonna sell or a Sting is gonna sell and a Paul Simon is gonna sell and a Bob Dylan is gonna sell, that kind of opens up the floodgates for artists in general."

Pop hitmakers Air Supply are also interviewed, providing career context for these enormous deals. And we get a glimpse of Primary Wave's scrupulously handwritten chalkboard tracking the placements of various hits in the company's trove of copyrights. Check it out.
