Mexican American sibling trio Yahritza y Su Esencia (Yahritza and Her Essence)—the highly sought-after indie act whose viral "Soy el Unico" ("I'm the Only One") pinged U.S. and global streaming charts last month—will release its debut EP, Obsessed, 4/22 via Lumbre Music/Ingrooves.
Led by 15-year-old vocalist Yahritza Martinez, the Washington-based group has become the subject of a bidding war, claiming they've heard from every major player. A TikTok clip featuring Yahritza's piercing vocals sparked crazy action in March. Her raw performance of "Soy el Unico" resonated particularly with U.S. listeners, surpassing 25m streams in the U.S. alone as it nears its fourth full week of activity and debuting in the domestic Top 10 lists of both Spotify and Apple Music.
The Spanish-language acoustic ballad can be slotted into the Regional MX genre, though Yahritza's performance bears some alt-rock edge. The trio's originality and the streaming numbers its putting up point to the future of the form, which has expanded significantly in recent years.
Raised by farmworkers in the Yakima Valley, the Martinez children—in addition to Yahritza, brothers Jairo, 17, and Armando, 24—began learning instruments and creating music inspired by their roots in Michoacán.
