DIGGIN' IN THE CRATES FOR U.S. RSD 2022

A 7” single from Taylor Swift, Prince’s 1995 The Gold Experience, Elton John’s Complete Thom Bell Sessions and a collection of lesser-known treasures from the Everly Brothers are headed to the LP crates for this year’s U.S. Record Store Day, 4/23 (also the date of U.K. Record Store Day).

Swift, RSD's first global ambassador, will issue a single of "the lakes" b/w "the lakes (original version)," marking the first vinyl appearance of the latter. She also has a track on the 16-song Portraits of Her, proceeds from which will benefit We Are Moving the Needle, an organization of women in the music industry.

Sony’s Legacy Recordings, meanwhile, will put out Future’s DS2 on teal vinyl; Lou Reed’s I'm So Free: The 1971 RCA Demos; Mariah Carey’s #1s; the two-LP compilation Splendiferous Santana; and the Patti Smith Curated by Record Store Day compilation. The Prince reissue, out 6/18, will be a replica of the original translucent-gold, expanded iteration of 1995. This is the first time the complete album will be distributed following a legal battle over "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." Live sets by Miles Davis and Pearl Jam will also arrive on 6/18.

The Everly BrothersHey Doll Baby (Rhino) is a newly remastered 17-track compilation that will be available as a limited edition of 7,500 copies on baby-blue vinyl. Other Rhino sets include: Chicago’s triple-LP Chicago at Carnegie Hall, April 10, 1971; a 40th anniversary-edition picture disc of Devo’s Oh, No! It's Devo; the five-LP Grateful Dead Wembley Empire Pool, London, England 4/8/72 (Live); a seven-LP box Ramones–The Sire LPs (1981-1989); the four-LP incarnation of The DoorsL.A. Woman Sessions; and The ReplacementsUnsuitable for Airplay: The Lost KFAI Concert.

Universal Music Group is offering Elton John’s six-song set of 1977 recordings, The Complete Thom Bell Sessions; a 40th anniversary four-song vinyl EP release of U2’s “A Celebration”; a picture-disc version of Kacey Musgraves’ star-crossed; a 40th anniversary picture disc of Donna Summer; a four-track Sam Smith EP, Nirvana; and the vinyl debut of Sandy Denny’s Gold Dust Live at the Royalty, which captures her final live performance, in 1977.

Among other Record Store Day 2022 items that caught our eye: The LumineersBRIGHTSIDE: Bonus Tracks (Dualtone); 2001's The Knack Live at the House of Blues (Liberation Hall); Elemental Music’s five-LP Revelations: The Complete ORTF 1970 Fondation Maeght Recordings of Albert Ayler’s last great concert appearance; and Metallica lead guitarist Kirk Hammett’s solo debut, Portals (Blackened Recordings), a four-song instrumental EP, with a vinyl version especially for RSD.
