GIDDENS OPERA COMING TO L.A.

Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels’ opera Omar will make its West Coast premiere at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion during LA Opera’s 2022-23 season.

Based on the autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, a West African scholar enslaved in the American South, it will star Jamez McCorkle, Daniel Okulitch and Jacqueline Echols and be conducted by Kazem Abdullah.

The opera will premiere at Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, S.C., which runs 5/27-6/12.

It is one of six main-stage productions announced Monday. The others are Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Puccini's Tosca, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Debussy's Pelléas and Mélisande and Verdi's Otello.
