POP GO THE TONYS

The hits of pop and rock music’s past dominated the 74th annual Tony Awards as Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical and Jagged Little Pill swept the awards for musicals.

Moulin Rouge!, with dozens of hits from the '60s and '70s, was named Best Musical as part of its 10-Tony haul; Jagged Little Pill, featuring the songs of Alanis Morissette, was honored for Diablo Cody’s book and Lauren Patten’s supporting performance; and Adrienne Warren took home the Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical award for her starring role in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

The Tonys were split between a two-hour show on Paramount+, at which the majority of the trophies were handed out, and a two-hour special on CBS, which presented the top awards and performances.

The goal of the network broadcast was an announcement that Broadway has returned, with David Byrne’s American Utopia, The Lion King and Six among the musicals ready for out-of-town audiences.
