NETFLIX DOMINATES EMMYS

Netflix received 44 Emmy Awards this year, more than doubling its 2020 total and distantly outpacing HBO/HBO Max, which took home 19 awards.

Netflix’s The Crown, named Best Drama Series, and The Queen’s Gambit, Best Limited Series, took home 11 awards each on Sunday and at the previous week’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies.

The wins were firsts for the streaming service as it had never won a major award for a series in the eight years it has produced original programming.

It’s also the first time Netflix has come out on top; its best previous result was in 2018 when it tied with HBO with 23 wins. HBO and HBO Max racked up wins via Hacks and Mare of Easttown.

Disney Plus won 14 awards and Apple TV Plus received 10 total Emmys, mostly for Ted Lasso, which was named Best Comedy Series.

The night's biggest surprise, though, was the opener, when a collection of TV stars paid tribute to the small screen via a Biz Markie hit.
