DYLAN BOOTLEG SERIES HEADS INTO THE 1980S

Columbia and Legacy’s next collection of Bob Dylan vault recordings will explore the first half of the 1980s with outtakes from the sessions that produced Shot of Love, Infidels and Empire Burlesque as well as live performances from the era.

Springtime in New York: The Bootleg Series Vol. 16 (1980-1985) will be released on 9/17. The deluxe, five-CD edition will include 57 recordings, 54 of which have never been released. There will also be two-CD and two-LP versions.

Third Man Records will release a four-LP version of Springtime in New York as part of its Vault Series. The Third Man vinyl set is 42 songs that do not overlap with Sony/Legacy's double-LP version.

The deluxe edition's disc one, recorded in 1980 and 1981, includes rehearsals of "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)” and "To Ramona" plus several covers ("Mystery Train" featuring Ringo Starr, "Sweet Caroline," "Fever" and "Abraham, Martin and John") with musicians Fred Tackett, David Mansfield, Willie Smith, Tim Drummond and Jim Keltner.

Disc two is devoted to outtakes and alternate takes of recordings produced by Chuck Plotkin for Shot of Love, while discs three and four are made up of Infidels material performed with Mark Knopfler, Mick Taylor and Sly & Robbie.

Disc five of the album spans live tracks from Ireland's Slane Castle and "License to Kill" from Late Night With David Letterman alongside alternate takes and outtakes from the Empire Burlesque sessions.

In his liner notes, Damien Love writes, "And that's the real story of this gloriously untrammeled collection. The songs. The songs stripped free of trappings, tampering, passing tastes and judgments. The songs broken down to the sound of people really doing this, right now, acting on instinct. The songs rough and rowdy, bruised and tender, joking and crying, nagging and striving and yearning. The songs were always there, and here they are still, keeping pace with us."
