AND THE EMMY NOMS FOR MUSIC GO TO...

Documentaries on Billie Eilish and The Bee Gees and music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas were among the recipients of Emmy Award nominations today.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. received Emmy nominations in the Music and Lyrics and Music Direction categories. He's up for the Television Academy's equivalent of Best Original Song—Outstanding Original Music Lyrics—for writing the music, with Andrew Hey, to “Crimson Love,” featured on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Austin Wineberg and Lindsey Rosin contributed the lyrics.

The Zoey team is competing in a difficult field that includes EGOT Robert Lopez, nominated for writing “Agatha All Along” with his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, for WandaVision; Bo Burnham’s “Comedy” from his Netflix special Bo Burnham: Inside; Mark Shaiman’s “End Title” for Soundtrack of Our Lives; Christopher Lennertz and Michael Saltzman’s “Never Truly Vanish” for Amazon’s The Boys; and Anna Hauss, Robert Weinroder and William Horberg’s song for The Queen’s Gambit, “I Can’t Remember Love."

In the Music Direction category, Mason’s nomination is for the only series among the five nominees. The music directors of single-episode specials up for the award are: Aron Forbes for Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry; Burnham for Inside; Ricky Minor for Celebrating America—An Inauguration Night Special; and Karl Mansfield for David Byrne’s American Utopia.

The Outstanding Music Supervision category, meanwhile, is stacked with some of the best-known supes in the biz: Alexandra Patsavas is nominated for Bridgerton; Dave Jordan and Shannon Murphy are up for WandaVision; Randall Poster has The Queen’s Gambit; Liza Richardson is nominated for Lovecraft Country; the team of Amanda Krieg Thomas, Alexis Martin Woodall and Ryan Murphy are in for Halston; and I May Destroy You is acknowledged for the work of Ciara Elwis and Matt Biffa.

Among musical talent receiving noms, there’s Billy Porter for Best Actor, Drama, for Pose; Cynthia Erivo in Genius: Aretha (Best Actress, Limited Series or TV Movie); and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. for Hamilton (Best Actor, Limited Series or TV Movie).

Three musician-focused shows are up for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special: HBO and Polygram Entertainment’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart; HBO’s Tina Turner film Tina; and FX/The New York TimesFraming Britney Spears.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards is up for four awards in the Variety Special categories: Outstanding Special (Live); Production Design; Lighting Design/Direction; and Technical Direction. The Weeknd’s Super Bowl LV Halftime Show is also up for Variety Special, Lighting and Technical Direction.

Netflix’s The Crown and Disney+’s The Mandalorian led the way with 24 nominations each. Disney+’s WandaVision was right behind them with 23. A full list is here.
