BMC AWARDS YOUR FUTURE IS NOW SCHOLARSHIPS

The Recording Academy's Black Music Collective and partner Amazon Music have bestowed Your Future Is Now scholarships upon three HBCU students.

North Carolina Central University’s Jawan Davidson, Morehouse College’s Akeal Evans and Howard University’s Nyah Hardmon each received $10,000 for the 2021-22 school year. The students will also be part of a two-week immersive rotation program with Amazon Music department leads. Additionally, the BMC and Amazon Music will donate $10k each to two as-yet-unnamed HBCUs for equipment for their music programs.

The awards were announced by Oscar and four-time Grammy winner H.E.R. during the BMC event Protect Black Music: Preservation, Legacy and Protecting the History of Black Music. Remarks were made by Recording Academy President/CEO Harvey Mason Jr., Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer Valeisha Butterfield Jones, New York Chapter trustee and BMC chair Riggs Morales and Executive Director, Washington, D.C. Chapter and Executive Sponsor of the BMC Jeriel Johnson. Chicago Chapter trustee and BMC member J. Ivy gave a spoken-word performance.

A panel featured Black Music History Library founder Jenzia Burgos and Grammy winners Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson and Raphael Saadiq, among others.
