Could BTS's new summer single, "Butter" (Big Hit/Columbia), set the single-day streaming record for a Spotify debut? According to our abacus—and Ron Perry's Instagram story—"Butter" is on pace for a historic premiere.
"Butter" has already recorded the biggest single-day debut on Spotify's real-time counter, with 14.873 million streams and counting. The previous record was held by the group's prior single, "Dynamite", which recorded 12.638 million in its first 24 hours. *The former number is unfiltered, which means some streams will be eliminated.
On the Spotify global chart (using filtered numbers to combat excessive plays from one account, etc.), "Butter" could potentially earn the biggest single-day debut ever. The current debut record is held by Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber’s “I Don’t Care” with 10.977m. The overall one-day record is held by Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, which earned 17.22m unfiltered streams on Christmas Eve 2020.
It's worth noting that filtered counts for the Spotify chart have included major cuts in the past. For example, BTS’ “Dynamite” was reduced by 4.86m from the unfiltered number (to 7.77m on the published chart). Thus, beating Ed Sheeran’s debut record is possible but beating Mariah’s overall record is less likely.
