The Weeknd intends to continue his boycott of the Grammy Awards despite the Recording Academy's having altered its nomination process.
The New York Times and Variety got the update from Abel Tesfaye and his manager, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby.
“Even though I won’t be submitting my music, the Grammys’ recent admission of corruption will hopefully be a positive move for the future of this plagued award and give the artist community the respect it deserves with a transparent voting process,” the Weeknd said to the Times.
He told Variety that trust between artists and the Academy has been broken for some time. “It would be unwise to raise a victory flag,” he said. “I think the industry and public alike need to see the transparent system truly at play for the win to be celebrated, but it’s an important start.”
Slaiby added in the Variety article, “I was in shock when all this happened, but now I see it clearly, and I’m glad we stood for our beliefs.”
