H.E.R. is now an Oscar winner as well as a Grammy winner. The RCA artist took the Original Song trophy during Sunday's ceremony with "Fight for You" from Judas and the Black Messiah, sharing the award with her co-writers, producer Dernst “D'Mile” Emile II and Tiara Thomas. H.E.R. took home Grammy statuettes not long ago for Song of the Year and R&B Song and Album. Will she EGOT?
"Musicians, filmmakers, I believe we have an opportunity and responsibility to tell the truth and to write history the way it was and how it connects us to what we see going on in the world today," H.E.R. said. "Knowledge is power, music is power and as long as I’m standing, I’m always going to fight for us; I’m always going to fight for my people and fight for what’s right and I think that’s what music does and that’s what storytelling does."
Meanwhile, Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won the Original Score award for the jazz-heavy music they co-crafted for the animated landmark Soul.
Nomadland was named Best Picture, and its star, the great Frances McDormand, won for Best Actress. Anthony Hopkins claimed the Best Actor trophy for The Father.
Questlove played DJ for the ceremony; he plugged his own directorial debut, the doc Summer of Soul, which looks pretty damn compelling.
