THOUGHTS ON
THE VERDICT

The verdict isn’t enough. But it’s a start.

Justice, as more than one observer has noted, would’ve been George Floyd getting home to his loved ones.

But a cop has been held responsible for the brutal death of a Black civilian, and this is just.

That there was uncertainty about the outcome even though this vicious killing was documented on video speaks volumes about how utterly fucked-up our system is, how desperately we need to change how policing is done in America and how urgent it is to expel white supremacists from our government at all levels.

Some of us held our breaths for a time Tuesday. But let’s not forget those whose breath was stopped forever.
