GRAMMY BNA NOMS

The latest round of Spotify Singles, arriving during Grammy Week, brings together five Best New Artist nominees, with each one reimagining one of their own songs while also recording a tune from a past BNA nom.

In the first offering, a pair of artists bookending L.A.’s rich singer/songwriter tradition blend their voices, as Phoebe Bridgers is joined by Jackson Browne for a burnished intergenerational reworking of her Punisher standout “Kyoto.” She also inhabits John Prine’s elegiac “Summers End,” with Maria Taylor providing backing vocals. In 2018, Phoebe covered The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” for the series.

In the second, CHIKA, who turns 24 today, revisits “U SHOULD” from her 2020 debut album, INDUSTRY GAMES, and covers Billie Eilish’s “my future.” The Alabama-born rapper/singer picked it “because the song is beautiful and presents an interesting opportunity to talk about where I am as an artist, especially on the heels of this nomination,” she explains. “My present is moving so fast that each passing moment is practically the future already. And I’m in love with the ride I’m on.”
